  1. Fried Foods

Fried foods are abundant with trans-fats, so take care of their consumption if you are one of those who are taking thyroid medication.

Foods which are high in trans-fats can cause a blockage to the effectiveness of the thyroid hormone and have a negative effect on the natural production of it. It is recommended to remove these foods from your diet.

  1. Soy

In this case, it is allowed only a moderate consumption of soy. In case you are treating hypothyroidism with synthetic thyroid hormone, this could prevent the body’s absorption of the treatment.

After taking thyroid medication, it is recommended to wait for 4 hours before consuming soy, giving the body enough time to metabolize each substance individually. Those who have a deficiency of iodine can have decreased function of thyroid because the soy has isoflavones.

Gliadin is a protein contained in gluten which the human body does not recognize. So, when you are consuming foods with gluten you are always putting the health of your thyroid at risk. The thyroid has an enzyme similar to gliadin, known as transglutaminase, so the consumption of gluten makes your immune system provoke an attack response to the gliadin and transglutaminase in the thyroid.

After consuming gluten it can take 6 months for a damage to occur to your thyroid. If you are suffering from autoimmune thyroid disease, we recommend you to go to a regular screening for gluten intolerance and Celiac disease.

  1. Sugar

In order to maintain proper levels of the blood sugar, you need to avoid product with refined sugar, especially this is of great importance for those suffering from autoimmune thyroid disease.

The pancreatic function can be affected by these foods, which leads to insulin resistance, causing damage to your thyroid and reducing the hormone levels.

  1. Coffee

If you are having problems with your thyroid, you need to put coffee last on the list of morning refresher.

A proper consumption of coffee during the day is not that harmful, but the excessive one can be very harmful to the adrenal glands.
