Lumbago is a common health problem that affects people at any age. It is believed to be associated with modern lifestyle, and over 80% of world’s population deal with it at any point in their life. Chances are that you will experience pain in the lower lumbar spine once in a while.
What does lumbago stand for?
If you enjoyed listening to your science teacher, you probably know that the spine is a complex anatomical structure of 7 vertebrae in the cervical area, 12 in the thoracic area, 5 in the lumbar area, 5 in the sacral area and 4 in the coccygeal area.
These bones are separated with gristle circles that enable their movement, and they are connected to many muscles, nerves, blood vessels and ligaments, which creates a strong pillar in the body. This provides a right standpoint of the human body. The vertebrae create a protective canal for the spinal cord, and the nerves that spread along our hands and feet.
Our spine carries an important function, and it is exposed to constant burden, pressure, tension, and bending.
But, not every vertebra in the spine has the same feature. For instance, cervical vertebrae are more movable than the chest vertebrae. Certain degenerative changes contribute to the occurrence of unbearable pain. Back pain may appear in the lumbar region and usually in the lumbar dorsal-crossing, between movable and burdened back lumbar and low rolling vertebra.
Physical jobs, incorrect body posture, long sitting hours, age-related degenerative processes, osteoporosis, or spinal abnormalities after specific injuries and surgeries increase the risk of lumbago.
Possible treatment and prevention
Comfrey plant is commonly used in the treatment of this problem. It grows well in meadows and fields near water springs. A group of researchers from the German Sport University in Bonn tested the effect of an ointment made from comfrey plant extract, and the result showed that the pain disappears after 5 days. About 120 patients with lower and upper back pain participated in the research. Half of the patients used comfrey ointment for 5 days, 3 times a day.
The other half received an ointment with different formula. About 39% of the patients from the second group experienced a relief after 5 days, and scientists explained that the relief came as a result of a placebo effect or huge desire to get better. Patients who used the comfrey ointment had decreased their pain by 95%. Comfrey provides an instant effect, and the patients felt better an hour after the application.
The results of this research were published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Comfrey root extract has proven to reduce acute pain, as shown by this research. Comfrey root is similar to beets, and the plant has large, hairy leaves. The plant has the power to reduce joint pain and knee arthritis. Comfrey plant should be used in capsules or as a food supplement, because it can affect the liver.
