Are you familiar with the awful feeling where out of nowhere you experience cramps in your muscles? And it seems like there is nothing which can help you to relieve them. Even though this health condition does not have any medical significance and it does not need to make you concerned, it can cause terrible pains.

What is a muscle cramp?

A muscle cramp is a condition when there occurs a sudden tightening of your muscle which causes painful and strong contraction. It comes very quickly and it can last for a few seconds or even a few minutes. Usually, muscle cramps occur at the time when you are falling asleep, but however, they can also wake you up at night.

A muscle cramp is when your muscle suddenly tightens into a very strong and painful contraction.  It can for a few seconds, or a few minutes, and it comes on very quickly.  Often they will wake up at night, or happen just as you are falling asleep.

What makes your legs cramp at night time?

  • Diuretics
  • Steroids
  • Dehydration
  • Lack of potassium
  • It can occur as a side effect from medication
  • Trauma to the muscle
  • You may have had vigorous exercise in the daytime
  • Your legs may have been in an awkward position
  • Your legs may have been still for too long

What can you do for muscle cramps?

Well, the best thing you can do is to rehydrate and drink. If this does not help you, there are a few things which you can do at your own home, which do not include the use of the counter medication:

Epsom salt bath

Epsom Salts contain magnesium which can provide healing and muscle relaxation. Add 2 cups of Epsom salts to your bath and soak in it for 20 minutes. You can repeat this procedure every day if you feel that there is a need for that.

Note: People who suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart diseases are advised not to use Epsom salts.

Yellow mustard

Mustard also has magnesium in its content, and as we said before magnesium is extremely effective for relieving leg cramps. Usually, athletes use 1 or 2 spoons of mustard in order to stop cramps. Mustard has acetic acids that promote the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter which encourages the work of muscles

  • 1 tablespoon rosemary

It is considered that dehydration, intense thirst, heat exhaustion, and heavy perspiration are the main reasons for this problem. So always remember that the best thing to do in order to prevent muscle cramps is to stay hydrated.
