Popping frozen dinners in the microwave is the easiest way to get your meal ready in no time. All it takes is reading the directions, and turning your microwave on. This is what Americans are used to. Modern Americans. Experts at the Southwest Museum of Engineering, Communication and Computation (SMECC) say that over 95% of American homes have a microwave, because it is “almost impossible/pretty difficult” to live without.

Wonder what is the fuss? Well, your frozen meal may pack a good portion of healthy ingredients low in calories, but the way you prepare it destroys the nutrients, and you get none of the benefits. Microwaves literally reduce the nutritional value of the food you are preparing, and put you at risk of severe health ailments. So, the question is next: Is this household appliance worth sacrificing your wellbeing?

Microwaves reduce nutritional value of foods

Prepping your food in a microwave destroys the nutrients. Your nutritious meal will soon turn into “dead food.” Why is this so? It is all because of the dielectric heating of microwaves. “They bounce around the inside of your (microwave) oven and are absorbed by the food you put in it,” explains Dr. Joseph M. Mercola, licensed physician and surgeon. Water molecules rotate at high speed in the microwave and in your food. This creates something scientists call “molecular friction” which heats up the food. This changes the molecular structure of the food, and reduces its nutritional value.

Microwaves DESTROY breast milk and vitamin B12

When heated in the microwave, the food loses its vitamin B12. According to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, raw beef, pork and milk lose up to 40 percent of their vitamin B12 after being cooked in the microwave. The heating process turned vitamin B12 into its inactive form.

Microwave heating also destroys mighty bacteria-fighting agents in breast milk. For the needs of a research on the subject, researchers heated up 22 freshly frozen breast milk for 30 seconds on low or high setting. The samples were tested for the lysozyme activity and antibodies. The method of heating frozen human milk is common in intensive care nurseries. The results were published in the journal Pediatrics. Heating breast milk at high temperatures stimulates the growth of E Coli for 18 times more than the unmicrowaved human milk. Low-temperature heating also reduces the lysozyme activity and stimulates the growth of harmful bacteria.

Microwaves trigger the formation of carcinogens in food

Heating foods wrapped in plastic creates carcinogens in the food. Numerous Russian and German studies were the reason why the Russian government released a warning about the dangers caused by microwave ovens. These health hazards affect both health and environment. Microwave heating creates toxic chemicals like BPA, polyethylene terpthalate (PET), benzene, toluene, and xylene, as stated at Foodbabe.com. The plastic containers you use to microwave your meals release these carcinogens and other hazardous toxins into the food, and you end up munching these.

Microwaves change your blood

According to a Swiss clinical study, microwaving changes blood. This applies especially to those who have used microwaved milk and veggies. This study involved eight participants who ate food prepared in different ways. Yes, microwaving was part of the study, too. The results showed that microwave heating decreases the number of red blood cells, and increases the level of white blood cells and cholesterol. The non-ionizing radiation causes changes in both blood and heart rate.

Microwaves change the heart rate

The 2.4 GHz radiation or the frequency of radiation emitted by the microwaves affects the way your body works. Dr. Magda Havas at the Trent University revealed that radiation emitted by the microwaves can affect heart rate and heart rate variability. As you may guess, these levels lie within the federal safety guidelines, but it is a fact that the heating process changes the heart rate. So, if you notice that your heart beat is irregular or if you experience chest pain, make sure you stop using this household appliance.
