Sugar is addictive just like tobacco

From a point of view as being both addictive, tobacco and sugar are much alike. As shown in the findings of the report called Sugar Consumption at a Crossroads, sugar affects our health in so many negative ways, causing obesity and health issues. This is the reason why many companies are protesting against the comparison, such as Coca- Cola, Snapple and Dr. Pepper.

Companies of this kind will have two options. The first is to self- regulate, which means that they will have to offer drinks whish have natural sweeteners, with zero or low calorie content. The second is to tank. This is a lot more difficult, since it means that they will have to completely remove the sugar content.

Nevertheless, the reality is that these facts do not affect the public as it may be assumed. Even though the negative effects of sugar are publicized, they do not give the favorable results. Similarly, cigarettes have not been among the top sellers since the 70s, when were proved to be connected to lung cancer.

Still, many people smoke habitually despite the evidence that smoking is no good at all.

What is the amount of sugar consumed?

Sugar must be controlled just like alcohol and tobacco, if we desire to combat obesity and promote better health. Sugar adds to almost 20 percent of the diet of an American, represented by added sugars, including high fructose corn syrup and refined sugar.

Sugar is as a natural ingredient in many food products. In the last half a century, the overall consumption of sweet products has tripled. This can be illustrated by the rate of soda drank by Americans, which shows that an average person drinks over 50 gallons annually.

However, even though there is a connection between sugar and type 2 diabetes, sugar is not the same as tobacco. There was a medical research that gave evidence that tobacco caused the lung cancer on people who consume it. Meanwhile, sugar does contribute to the occurrence of diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes.
Nevertheless, there is no way to provide proof that it is the main cause, since the consumed amount of sugar cannot be measured.

At the end, predictions are that sugar consumption will remain the same. No matter how many people decide and succeed to limit the intake of sugar, still there will be a huge number of companies that will persist on selling their products, full of sugar.
