Avocado trees like warm areas, and definitely do not grow well under cold weather conditions and frost. Check our detailed instructions, and plant your own avocado tree. Make sure you keep the pot inside.

Pit the avocado

The first thing you need to do is take the pit out, but be careful, you do not want to cut it through. Wash and clean the pit. Soak it in clean water, and scrub any remains of the flesh. Make sure you do not scratch the brown skin of the pit.

Pierce the pit

Avocado pits differ in many aspects, but they all have a flat bottom – the part from which the root is released – and a top, or the pointy end from which pits release their sprouts. You have to make a difference between the top and the bottom, because the flat bottom is the part that is soaked in water. Stick 2 toothpicks in the pit, crosswise, and make sure they keep it from being completely immersed in the water.

Soak the pit

The flat bottom of the pit is the only part that goes in the water, which is why you have to be sure that the toothpicks are well wedged. Remember, you have to stick them at an angle, so that the pit rests partially in water, when placed over the glass.

Sprouting phase

Within 3-6 weeks, you should notice that the top of the seed has cracked. You will also notice a stem sprout emerging out of it. The roots are on the other end, at the bottom. Once the stem grows 5-6 inches long, clip off the leaves. After 2-3 weeks, you will see a few more leaves.

Trim the sprout

Trimming is important, since it provides a fresh growth. Trim the sprout tail when it grow about 6-7 inches long.

You are ready for planting

You need a large pot that is 8” to 10” across. You also need a good potting soil. Fill the pot about an inch of the rim. Use your fingers to make a hole in the soil, and plant the seed. All that is left for you to do is water the pot.
