Scientists Discovered That Rosemary Essential Oil Boosts Your Memory Retention

Rosemary oil has a fresh, sweet, and slightly medicinal aroma. You’ve probably have heard that this essential oil can heal skin, balance hormone, and improve the condition of your hair. But, did you know that rosemary essential oil acts as a memory booster? In fact, this oil boosts your memory retention by up to 75%.

Professor Mark Moss at Northumbria University in Newcastle, England, conducted a study in order to test rosemary essential oil and its ability to improve our memory. The study included 60 older volunteers who were asked to sit in a room infused with either rosemary oil, lavender oil, or no aroma at all. The volunteers were asked to remember objects placed around the room: what and where they were.

It is a surprising fact that the volunteers in the rosemary-infused room had better results compared to other volunteers (especially to subjects in the lavender-infused room because lavender is a natural sedative).

Rosemary oil contains compounds that are very beneficial for your memory. For instance, it contains 1,8-cineole that can increase the activity of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Inhalation is the most effective way to get the effects of rosemary straight to your brain.

Mark and his team of experts analyzed blood samples from the subjects. They discovered that those who sat in the rosemary-infused room had traces of the memory-boosting chemicals from rosemary oil in the blood.

Other Benefits of Rosemary Essential Oil

Indigestion:  Rosemary oil has the ability to relieve constipation, flatulence, stomach cramps, and bloating. It is believed that this oil can stimulate appetite as well. Many studies showed that rosemary essential oil can detoxify the liver and regulate the creation and release of bile, which is of significant importance for the digestive process.

Stress relief:  Rosemary oil can reduce the level of cortisol, a hormone released during body’s flight-or-flight response to stress, in the saliva. Inhaling rosemary and lavender oils for 5 minutes can reduce cortisol and decrease the risk of chronic stress.

Pain relief:  Rosemary essential oil is known for its ability to relieve pain. So, you can use it to treat headaches, arthritis, and muscle pains. Just use the oil to massage the affected area. This oil possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties and it is an excellent way to address pain from sprains and joint aches.

Immune system boost:  According to a 2007 study, after regular massage and inhalation of rosemary essential oil, the patients experienced reduced cortisol levels. It has been also shown that the free-radical-scavenging activity in the body significantly increased. Antioxidants are extremely beneficial for fighting infection and disease. The regular use and inhalation of this oil can strengthen your immunity and prevent diseases related to free radicals.

Respiratory problems:   It has been shown that the scent of the oil provides relief from throat congestion. What is more, it is very beneficial for treating respiratory allergies, sore throat, colds, and flu. Due to its potent antiseptic properties, rosemary oil is beneficial for respiratory infections. This oil has antispasmodic properties as well and it is usually used in some treatment programs for bronchial asthma.
