The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, destroyed hundreds of illegal containers imported from China. The whole event took place at the Port of San Francisco. Wonder why? Well, these ‘packages’ contained rat meat!
This would not probably be that odd, but the rat meat was planned to be sold as chicken. The nasty meat had been planned to be shipped for various points in several states, and then sold at the market as chicken.
The FDA says that there is a huge potential of another 300,000 lbs of rat meat being offered in restaurants and grocery stores across the USA. Ronal Jones, an FDA inspector, claims that this meat is not that dangerous when cooked completely. However, the import and sales of meat like this are prohibited in the USA.
According to Allen James, an FBI coordinator, the business with such meat brings great profit. He also mentioned the case of opossum meat that arrived from Mexico. For him, this is one of the ways criminal organizations use to make illegal money.
FDA inspectors added that consumers cannot really make a difference between legal meat and such ‘delicacies.’ Jenny Brookside, the FDA spokesperson says that they cannot locate some of the meat that has already found its way on the market. According to her, the only way to notice any difference between chicken and rat meat is to determine whether the meat has a slightly ‘different’ taste than usual.
The FDA conducted a study in 2014, which showed that 36 million of illegally imported meat reaches the markets in the USA.
