How to grow your own garlic

Growing garlic in your home garden is no big deal. You just need some free space, and consider yourself lucky if you have an outdoor garden.

But, remember, you should plant nothing other than organic garlic cloves. Non-organic garlic is grown with pesticides and harsh chemicals, and it cannot sprout when planted. Having this in mind, we give you a few simple instructions on how to grow garlic at home.

  1. Plant your garlic cloves before the freezing season, preferably in October in the Northern hemisphere. If you are planting it indoors, the season does not matter.
  2. Loose and fertile soil is your best option. Top it with 2-3 inches of organic matter. Create shallow furrows that would be 6 inches apart.
  3. Use the larger cloves from the garlic bulb for planting. The smaller cloves fit better for cooking and home treatments.
  4. Plant the cloves 2 inches deep and 4 inches apart. The pointy tip should be faced up.
  5. Fill in the holes, and water your garlic. Adding compost is a nice idea. All that is left for you is waiting.
  6. Fertilize the plants whenever they start popping up. Water the soil when it is a bit dry about an inch below the surface. Garlic plants do not require much water. Clip off any flowers.
  7. Count the leaves on your plant. Harvest the garlic when the plants have 5-6 green leaves.

Use your home grown garlic right away or clean and hang it in a dry and cool place. Keep your garlic in a dark and well-ventilated room.
