This is alarming! 70% of Olive oil found in the stores in the US it is fake! In fact, it has been cut with cheaper, low-quality oils.

7 of the biggest olive oil manufacturers in the US have been using cheaper, inferior oils so they can minimize the cost of production. This does not differ from the situation in 2008 when more than 400 Italian police officers were involved in a major crackdown known as “Operation Golden Oil.”

This led to a seizure of 85 oil farms that were adding some percentages of chlorophyll to canola and sunflower oil, and selling these products as extra virgin olive oil. But, the reality is that before being sold to the producer as “extra virgin” the oil is mixed, colored, perfumed and colored.

Because of this, the Australian government investigated their own olive oil market. After testing of all “extra virgin olive oils” brands, they found out that none of them had the 2012 certification for being a pure olive oil.

The University of California also conducted studies on 124 imported brands of extra virgin olive oil which showed that more than 70% of the samples did not pass the test.

The brands that failed the test:

  • Coricelli
  • Pompeian
  • Carapelli
  • Carapelli
  • Bertolli
  • Safeway
  • Colavita
  • Mezzetta
  • Felippo Berio
  • Star
  • Sasso
  • Antica Badia
  • Primadonna
  • Mazola
  • Whole Foods

The brands that passed the test and can be trusted:

  • Olea Estates
  • Lucini
  • Ottavio
  • Corto Olive
  • Omaggio
  • McEvoy Ranch Organic
  • Cobram Estate
  • California Olive Ranch
  • Bariani Olive Oil
  • Kirkland Organic
  • Lucero

However, there are simple tests that you can do at your home in order to check if your olive oil is pure or not. You should place the bottle in the fridge for 30 minutes and notice if the oil will start to solidify. If it does then this indicates that the oil is rich in monounsaturated fat, which is exactly what extra virgin oil contains. If there are no signs of solidification, this means that your oil is a fake one.

Well, this is not 100% accurate test, but it is a good indicator if you are not sure about the quality of your oil.

However, you can also check “California Olive Oil Council Certified Extra Virgin” And “Australian Extra Virgin Certified” for official governmental seals of approval on the label.
