A young woman in her late twenties had an issue related to uterine fibroids. The doctors confirmed that she has a “family of fibroid tumors”. Even though the tumors were benign, they had caused her a lot of PMS cramps, heavy menstrual bleeding, and painful intercourse. She had some surgical procedures to remove the fibroids, but unfortunately, they appeared once again. The doctors told her that her infertility was associated with the growth of these fibroids. She was aware that her diet may have an influence on the growth of the fibroids, but she was not sure since she was a vegetarian.

Although a vegetarian, her diet was not completely “clean”. Some things that she consumed regularly were contributing to the growth of the tumors.

Here are some of the foods that cause uterine fibroids.

  • Soy products

Vegetarians eat more soy products for protein. Eating soy in moderate amount can be beneficial, but the excessive consumption can cause gout and fibroids growth. Soy products (except for fermented soy such as tempeh and miso) are abundant with phytoestrogens that are harmful to women’s health.

  • Soy milk

Soy milk has a high content of estrogen that can cause hormonal imbalance. An estrogen dominance condition can lead to other health problems, including:

  • Infertility
  • Weight gain
  • Endometriosis
  • Blood clots in menstruation
  • Fibroids in breasts
  • Irregular menstruation cycles
  • Low or no sex drive
  • Thyroid issues
  • Birth control pills

Oral birth control pills are usually prescribed to reduce heavy menstrual flow. In fact, they can contribute to the growth of the fibroids. HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) is another estrogen-mimicking drug that can encourage the growth of the fibroids.

  • Herbicides and pesticides:

Residues from pesticides, herbicides, and artificial fertilizers used on food crops mimic estrogen and affect the hormones. Foods stored or cooked in plastic wares can contribute to hormonal imbalances, thus leading to many health issues.

  • Processed foods:

You should avoid processed foods that are packed with artificial food additives including transfats, sugar, salt, flavorings, emulsifiers, colorings, and preservatives. They are detrimental to the liver and can weaken your liver functions.

  • Other Non-Vegetarian Causes Of Uterine Fibroids

Make sure to stay away from dairy and meat products from commercially-raised animals that are injected with hormones, steroids, and antibiotics because they can feed the tumors. If you want to eat dairy and meat products, always buy organic and hormone-free.

Warning Signs That You May Have Fibroids

  • Bladder Issues

Fibroids that grow on the outside wall of the uterus near the bladder can press against it, causing pressure that will lead to more frequent visits to the toilet. If you are going to the toilet frequently in the night, it is recommended to visit your doctor.

  • Rectal Pressure

Fibroids that grow towards the back of the uterus can press on the rectum, and cause an uncomfortable feeling of wanting to pass motion. Straining can cause hemorrhoids.

  • Lower Back Pain

Fibroids that are located on the outer back wall of the uterus can press against spinal nerves, thus causing intense pain. Problems can become more severe before and after menstruation.

  • Swelling of Lower Abdomen

Large fibroids can make woman look like she is pregnant. Many women don’t go to the doctor because there may not be a presence of pain.

Infertility or Frequent Miscarriages

Even though infertility and miscarriages can be caused by many reasons, it is considered that the presence of uterine fibroids can also cause these issues. By making a simple ultrasound scan, you can see if there is a presence of fibroids.

  • Prolonged and Heavy Menstruation

This is one of the most common warning signs of uterine fibroids. If you have bleeding with blood clots you should visit your doctor because heavy bleeding can lead to anemia. Cramps and pain in the back of the legs or lower abdomen are also common signs.

  • Painful Sexual Intercourse

Depending on the size and location of the fibroid, sexual intercourse can become painful and uncomfortable. The pain may be more severe in certain positions.

How to Prevent and Shrink Uterine Fibroids

Here are some diet and lifestyle changes/addition you can make to shrink the fibroids:

  • Vigorous exercise

Regular exercise together with eating the proper foods will regulate your ovulation and gradually reduce/shrink the fibroids.

  • Manage your stress

Stress can have a huge impact on your body. It can deplete the body of important nutrients, weaken the adrenal glands and other organs and cause hormonal imbalances.

  • Eat legumes and beans

Beans, legumes, avocados, chia seeds, eggs, and quinoa are great sources of protein that you should consume. You should eat a small portion of these protein foods with every meal. It will reduce the size of your fibroids, and protect you from breast and cervical cancers.

  • Liver support foods

You can strengthen your liver with foods beneficial for your liver, such as dandelion, grapefruit, beetroot, and milk thistle.

  • Beverages

Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks like sodas and coffee because they are diuretic and dehydrating. Even though many people recommend green tea for this condition, make sure to avoid it because green tea inhibits the absorption of iron. You may have lost a lot of menstrual blood and are possible anemic, so you don’t need any further complication.

  • Water

You should not drink tap water because it contains chlorine, fluoride and other heavy metals. You should have a good filtering system installed in your home in order to avoid taking in these toxins that are extremely harmful to your health.

  • Fruits and vegetables

Eat plenty of fresh organic vegetables and fruits. Green juices can also help to shrink the fibroids.

  • Helpful supplements

Spirulina, zinc, vitamin C, L- arginine, L-lysine, chlorella, and omega-3 are very beneficial supplements that can help to shrink the fibroids. You can also take Essiac Tea that has 8 powerful herbs that can detoxify the reproductive system.

  • Helpful herbs

Nettle tea, dandelion root, black cohosh, Dong quai, turmeric, pau d’arco, and chasteberry tincture are some of the herbs you make take to eliminate fibroids.
